18 crores of electricity stolen from Nagpur in a single year, FIR registered against consumers

18 crores of electricity were stolen from Nagpur in a single year, and 296 consumers had FIRs filed against them.

The agency has filed a criminal report against 296 customers after Mahavitaran, the state-owned power supply firm, discovered electricity theft of 18 crores in the past year. A report has been released by the Mahavitaran Regional Division's Security and Enforcement Department.

Throughout the months of April 2022 and March 2023, the Security and Enforcement Department inspected a total of 13,585 consumers. 2719 consumers were discovered stealing electricity during this examination. The case of electricity theft of Rs 17.82 crore was made public by initiating action against these users under Section 135 of the Electricity Act 2003, which was revised in 2007. The Electricity Act of 2003's Section 126 and 7909 more instances also revealed anomalies totaling Rs 71.78 crore.

A total of Rs 89.78 crore was fixed during this time, of which Rs 43.82 crore was recouped from the relevant clients. Along with this, 296 users who have not made the necessary payments have had cases of power theft filed against them in various police stations. Mahavitaran has urged the populace to report anyone stealing electricity.
