On Thursday evening, two individuals posing as officers from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) duped an elderly woman in Juni Kamptee and absconded with her gold chain valued at Rs 40,000. The victim, Urmila Purshottam Kawadkar, aged 70, resides in Riddhi-Siddhi Nagar, located behind the Indane Petrol Pump in Kalamna.
Two men, perched on a motorcycle near Jaistambh in Juni Kamptee, halted her progress. Identifying themselves as CID officers, they informed her of a recent robbery in which a woman was killed, and her gold chain was stolen. To safeguard her own jewellery, they requested that she remove her gold chain and place it inside her bag.
One of the fraudsters handed her a piece of paper, directing her to wrap the gold chain in it. Under the guise of assisting her, he diverted her attention and swiped the ornament. When the woman checked her bag, she was horrified to discover her gold chain missing. Before she could raise an alarm, the con men sped away on their motorcycle.
Upon the victim's complaint, Juni Kamptee Police initiated legal action, registering a case under Sections 419, 420, 170, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code and launched an investigation to apprehend the fake officers.
