AIIMS is overflowing with patients, leading to referrals to GMCH and Mayo hospitals. The emergency department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) is currently handling three thousand patients. However, due to limited bed capacity, incoming patients seeking treatment are being redirected to GMC, causing inconvenience for them.
In 2019, AIIMS, spanning 150 acres in Mihan, initiated patient care services at the OPD level, offering care across 18 different departments and various super-specialties like Burns, Plastic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Nephrology, Neonatology, Cardiology, Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Hematology, Neurology, Nuclear Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, and Urology.
Despite attracting patients from Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Vidarbha due to advanced treatment options and complex surgeries, AIIMS faces challenges in providing intensive care unit (ICU) beds. This results in critical patients being redirected to private hospitals.
The AIIMS outpatient department (OPD) has seen a significant increase in patient numbers, rising from approximately 1,800 to 2,000 patients five months ago to 2,900 currently. This increase is attributed to the availability of 24-hour emergency services, including radiology and pathology. However, the surge in patients has revealed staffing and bed shortages at AIIMS.
The patient load at AIIMS has surged, prompting recent approval for AIIMS Nagpur to recruit 300 new staff members, comprising 150 senior resident doctors and 150 junior resident doctors. Dr. Manish Srigiriwar, the Medical Superintendent at AIIMS Nagpur, indicates that this expansion will lead to an increase in available beds and a concerted effort to accommodate as many patients as possible.
