In a shocking case of medical negligence, a doctor at a government-run hospital in Nagpur walked out of an operating theater during a series of surgeries, reportedly due to his dissatisfaction over not being served tea. The incident unfolded on November 3 at the Mauda tehsil local health center in Nagpur, where eight women were scheduled for family planning surgery (vasectomy).
Dr. Tejrang Bhalavi, the doctor in question, had performed surgeries on four of the women and administered anesthesia to the remaining patients. After this, he made a request for a cup of tea from the hospital staff. However, when his request went unfulfilled, he abruptly exited the operating theater without completing the remaining surgeries.
Upon discovering Dr. Bhalavi's departure, the hospital administration swiftly contacted the district medical officer for assistance. Another doctor was subsequently dispatched to carry out the surgeries on the remaining anesthetized women.
In response to the incident, Nagpur Zilla Parishad's CEO, Soumya Sharma, initiated an investigation into the matter. A three-member committee has been established to look into the circumstances surrounding Dr. Bhalavi's actions. Based on the findings of this committee, appropriate actions will be taken against the doctor.
CEO Soumya Sharma expressed the seriousness of the situation and mentioned that if a doctor leaves a surgical procedure for a trivial reason like tea, the doctor should face legal consequences under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code. The incident raises critical concerns about medical professionalism and the duty of care owed to patients.
