Nagpur, India: Even though temperatures in Nagpur are staying below 40°C, people are feeling hot and uncomfortable due to high humidity levels.
On Sunday, the city recorded a high of 39.1°C and a low of 26°C. Cloudy skies and light rain have made the weather feel sticky and warmer than it actually is. The Meteorological Department says this humid weather may continue for the next two days, with chances of rain and strong winds.
The cause of this humidity is a weather system over Marathwada, which is pulling moisture into the Vidarbha region. While the showers have provided some relief from the usual dry May heat, thunderstorms and lightning are likely in some areas soon.
May is normally one of the hottest months in Nagpur, but this year the first half has been a bit cooler due to clouds and rain. However, weather experts warn that temperatures will start rising again from May 15.
The India Meteorological Department also said that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala around May 27. It usually takes about two weeks after that for the rains to reach central India, including Vidarbha.
Until then, residents are advised to stay cool, drink plenty of water, and be prepared for hotter days ahead.
