NHAI is in the process of creating a unique oxygen-rich bird park near Jamtha, designed to serve as a thriving habitat for a diverse range of bird species. The park, situated on an 8-hectare plot adjoining the cloverleaf interchange where Nagpur Outer Ring Road intersects with Wardha Road, comes with a project cost of 10 crore.
Similar oxygen parks have been established in various Indian cities, including Maharashtra, with Nashik Municipal Corporation and Bengaluru pioneering the concept. Over the past five years, these parks have become popular attractions, featuring manicured lawns, trees, water bodies, seating arrangements, and sometimes even food courts. Not only do they draw winged visitors, but they also offer a welcoming respite for weary travellers along the highway.
According to an NHAI official, the bird park is not merely an oxygen-generating area but a deliberately designed ecosystem aimed at supporting a rich variety of bird species. The official stated, "The park has been thoughtfully designed to actively contribute to oxygen generation. Beyond its ecological role, the project emphasizes the creation of a welcoming environment to attract and sustain various bird populations."
The park will boast various amenities, including a food court, restrooms, well-constructed walking paths, jogging and cycling tracks, watchtowers, amphitheatre platforms, and a dedicated children's play area. A naturally formed pond, seamlessly integrated into the existing topography, will serve as a central focal point. Architecturally, an aesthetically pleasing entrance gate and carefully planned landscaping will enhance the overall visual appeal of the park.
This collaborative initiative with the Social Forestry Department allocates approximately 2 hectares for joint landscape development, focusing on planting tree species known for their significant oxygen-producing capabilities. The park's location near Nagpur and its surrounding areas, which already attract migratory birds, is expected to provide a serene refuge for various bird species, including house sparrows that have become scarce in urban areas.
This visionary project is the brainchild of Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
