Nagpur, India: The construction of Phase 2 of the Nagpur Metro is advancing quickly towards the Kamptee-Kanhan stretch. The installation of viaducts and pillars is approaching Kamptee city, while soil testing and station building are underway. However, ongoing encroachments and insufficient police presence are expected to worsen traffic congestion as the work intensifies.
Road widths in Kamptee vary greatly due to encroachments. Some areas have enough space for construction, but others have narrow lanes that create major traffic problems. Long traffic jams are now common, with local police mostly focusing on issuing challans even though major metro construction in the city has yet to fully begin.
Nagpur Metro Public Relations Officer Akhilesh Halwe told Lokmat Times that 95% of land acquisition for Phase 2 in Kamptee is complete. On the Kamptee-Nagpur highway, authorities have deployed large numbers of staff, set up barricades, appointed traffic marshals, and installed speed breakers to control speeding, which often causes accidents. Similar safety measures will be implemented during construction inside Kamptee town.
When asked about encroachments blocking traffic, Halwe said removing them is not the responsibility of the Metro authorities.
Heavy construction work will mostly take place at night to minimise inconvenience to the public. Residents and commuters are advised to be patient and plan their journeys carefully as the project progresses.
