Government agencies have proposed measures to prevent future flooding of Nag River. In response to the recent September 23rd flooding, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has allocated 235 crore for necessary actions to avoid a recurrence. Additionally, various departments have been directed to be ready to allocate funds from their budgets as needed.
The city experienced significant flooding when Ambazari Lake overflowed due to heavy rainfall, resulting in property loss for many residents. Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari, the Municipal Commissioner, addressed the media and stated that one of the primary topics discussed during a recent meeting of government officials was the reinforcement of the earthen bund of Ambazari and the removal of obstacles in the flow of the Nag River near the lake.
The Maharashtra Engineering Research Institute (MERI) has been tasked with conducting an on-site inspection to determine if the Vivekananda Memorial and its connecting bridge obstruct the Nag River's flow. Dr. Chaudhari emphasized that these structures would be demolished if MERI recommended their removal.
Officials from the Water Resources Department (WRD) proposed the installation of sluice gates to regulate Ambazari Lake's water level. They will also assess the hydraulic design of the bridge in front of Krazy Castle, owned by the Public Works Department (PWD), and demolish it if necessary. Maha Metro has agreed to widen the Nag River within Krazy Castle Park if needed, while the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) will remove the parking lot of the Daga Layout skating rink.
NMC will proactively undertake river and nullah desilting ahead of the current schedule, with a focus on removing silt from the riverbanks. They will also construct retaining walls along the Nag River in areas where they are damaged or absent.
The WRD will prioritize the strengthening of the earthen bund of Ambazari Lake. Dr. Chaudhari noted that some funding is available for this work, and the remaining funds will be supplied by the state government through NMC.
