Nagpur, India: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced that all slaughterhouses and meat shops in the city will remain closed on Sunday, 12 May 2025, in observance of Buddha Purnima.
The decision has been issued by Dr Gajendra Mahalle, Chief Sanitation Officer of the Solid Waste Management Department. The civic body has instructed all relevant establishments to comply with the order strictly.
Officials from the NMC have also stated that a surveillance team will be monitoring compliance across the city. Any violations will lead to strict action as per municipal regulations.
This move is in line with the NMC’s customary practice of ordering the closure of meat-related businesses on major religious and cultural occasions out of respect for public sentiment. Similar restrictions were previously enforced during festivals like Mahavir Jayanti and Ambedkar Jayanti.
Citizens are requested to cooperate with the order and plan accordingly for the day.
