Nagpur, India: In a determined push to prevent flooding ahead of the monsoon, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has completed an extensive riverbed cleaning campaign across the city. As part of the pre-monsoon preparedness, more than 39 kilometres of riverbeds have been desilted, and over 30,000 cubic metres of silt have been removed from the Nag, Pili, and Pohra rivers.
The large-scale operation, led by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Abhijit Chaudhari and Additional Commissioner Vaishnavi B, aims to ensure smooth water flow and reduce the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas. The Public Works Department deployed heavy machinery including nine poclain machines, a JCB, and a tipper truck for the desilting efforts.
River-Wise Progress:
-
Nag River: Out of 16.58 km, 11.84 km have been cleaned. A total of 20,254 cubic metres of silt has been extracted across multiple stretches, including areas from Ambazari Lake to the Nag-Pili confluence.
-
Pili River: Of its 17.42 km stretch, 14.45 km have been cleared, with 4,610 cubic metres of silt removed. Work focused on areas from Gorewada Lake to the confluence with the Nag River.
