Nagpur, India: A fierce thunderstorm that struck Nagpur on Wednesday night disrupted electricity in several parts of the city. Heavy rain and strong winds led to trees collapsing onto power lines, plunging many areas into darkness. However, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) worked through the night to restore power to most affected localities.

The storm hit Nagpur around 7:50 pm, damaging electric poles, transformers, and cables, especially in the areas under MSEDCL's Ajni Division such as Hindustan Colony, Savarkar Nagar, and Gawande Layout. Fallen branches and snapped lines left residents without power for several hours.

MSEDCL teams quickly launched emergency repair work. The 11kV Gawande Layout and Savarkar Nagar feeders were restored by around 9:30 pm. The Hindustan Colony line posed a greater challenge due to major cable and insulator damage near Hotel Rosetta Club, but was finally repaired by 12:15 am.

Another major issue was the failure of a 10 MVA transformer at the 33kV Jattarodi Substation, causing shutdowns of several feeders. Power supply was rerouted via alternate lines, and the transformer was brought back online at 1:44 am.

Despite continued rainfall, MSEDCL restored electricity in areas like Rajabaksha, Patel Chowk, Medical Chowk, and parts of East Nagpur within three hours. Areas affected included Wadi, Hingna, Gayatri Nagar, Police Line, Zingabai Takli, Om Nagar, Khamla, and Dharampeth, among others.

MSEDCL has apologised for the disruption and thanked residents for their patience. The power utility praised its field staff for their tireless overnight work to ensure normalcy was restored across the city.
