Nagpur, India: In a strong move by the government, the Public Works Department (PWD) removed all illegal constructions from the Ravinagar government colony, making the area completely free from encroachments for the first time in over 70 years.

A total of 19 illegal structures were demolished during the operation. The area, located in the high-value Civil Lines zone, had long been occupied without permission despite many official notices sent over the years.

The demolition was carried out under the leadership of Executive Engineer Sanjay Upadhye. A large police force was present for support, with the operation supervised by DCP Rahul Madane, DCP Shweta Khedkar, and Senior Inspector Raut. Around 40 police officers, including women staff, were on duty, and fire and ambulance services were kept on standby.

Some protest was reported during the demolition, but it was quickly brought under control.

Officials said that the cleared land includes three big government plots. These will be used for new residential projects, likely in the form of vertical housing — similar to what is seen in Mumbai and Pune.

The action has been welcomed by many as a bold step towards better city planning and law enforcement.
