The escalating demand for electricity in the state has forced Mahavitran to procure expensive power sources to ensure an uninterrupted supply. Recent reports indicate that the lighting arrangements organized by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation during the 'C-20' conference have resulted in the consumption of approximately 1.85 lakh units of electricity per month.

Weeks after the conclusion of the C-20 summit, the city's luminosity continues to shine bright. In May 2022, the streetlights consumed a total of 20 lakh 22 thousand units of electricity. However, after the illuminations in May 2023, the consumption surged to 22 lakh 8 thousand units. Investigations have revealed that the increased electricity consumption is primarily due to the circular symbols on the streetlights, selfie points, various beautification-related activities, and awareness boards installed throughout the city. Interestingly, these developments have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the government's appeal to citizens to conserve electricity.

In anticipation of the heightened electricity demand during the summer season, Mahavitran procured a staggering 1,340 million units of costly electricity to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to consumers across the state. The power board acquired these units at an estimated cost of Rs. 6.01 per unit.

Notably, the highest power consumption was recorded in two specific areas, namely Civil Lines and Congress Nagar, which also witnessed extensive lighting arrangements for the 'C-20' initiative. In the Civil Lines Division, the electricity consumption for streetlights rose from 5.60 lakh units in May 2022 to 6.30 lakh units in May 2023, indicating an increase of 70 thousand units. Similarly, in the Congress Nagar Division, electricity consumption increased from 4.06 lakh units in May 2022 to 4.63 lakh units in May 2023, marking a rise of 57 thousand units.
