Nagpur, India: As the financial year comes to an end, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is making efforts to recover pending property tax. The civic body has even started seizing properties of defaulters. However, in a surprising revelation, many NMC employees themselves have not paid their property tax.

A recent review found that several municipal employees, including doctors, clerks, teachers, nurses, sanitation workers, security guards, Anganwadi workers, and ASHA workers, have not cleared their property tax dues. Some of these employees owe lakhs of rupees in unpaid taxes.

During a meeting, an official suggested that all employees should be required to submit a zero-balance tax receipt as proof of payment. However, no decision was made. This idea has led to debate, as many citizens believe that municipal employees should not receive any special treatment.

Nagpur has over six lakh properties, but only around two lakh property owners pay their taxes regularly. The NMC has introduced the Abhay Yojana (Amnesty Scheme) to encourage payments, yet many people, including municipal staff, continue to delay or avoid paying.

Residents are now demanding strict action against defaulting employees. They believe that NMC staff should set an example by paying their dues on time. Many are urging the Municipal Commissioner to make it mandatory for employees to clear their taxes and submit proof. If they fail to do so, strict action should be taken.

With unpaid taxes piling up, citizens are calling for fairness—everyone should follow the rules, including those working for the government.
