A fruit vendor with a criminal history, Yogesh Purushottam Umre (42) from Chandan Nagar, fell victim to a violent episode in an ongoing gang conflict at the ST stand. The dispute, primarily centred around securing passengers for private buses, escalated on Friday evening, causing unrest in the ST stand vicinity.
Yogesh, known for his criminal background and involvement with the notorious Meshram gang, operated a fruit stall at the ST stand. Sources reveal that Yogesh wielded influence at the ST stand due to his prior criminal activities and played a role in procuring passengers for private buses, leading to tensions with rival travel operators and criminals.
The conflict reached a boiling point on Thursday during a dispute over parking at the ST stand, resulting in Ganeshpeth police registering an extortion case. On Friday at 6:15 pm, while Yogesh was actively securing passengers, a criminal named Chetan, accompanied by associates, confronted him at the ST stand. A brutal attack ensued, involving a sharp weapon, after which the assailants quickly fled the scene.
Ganeshpeth police promptly responded to the incident, rushing Yogesh to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Given Yogesh's affiliation with the Meshram gang, there is a heightened risk of a gang war erupting in the area due to this tragic event.
