Nagpur, India: From the 2025–26 academic year, all students in Classes 11 and 12 (junior college) in Maharashtra will have to use biometric attendance — like fingerprint or face scan — to mark their presence in class.
This new rule has been introduced by the Maharashtra State Board to make sure students attend at least 75% of their classes. The move comes after reports that many students skip college to attend private coaching classes, and some even get fake attendance with the help of coaching centres.
The biometric system will stop such misuse by recording attendance only when the student is physically present. The rule will be applied in cities like Nagpur, Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, and others.
Sharad Gosavi, the Board Chairman, said this rule is to stop the growing problem of students joining colleges only on paper but attending private classes full-time. He added that this step will help improve discipline and learning in classrooms.
Some parents, however, have raised concerns. They feel the government should also improve teaching quality in colleges so that students don’t have to depend on coaching centres.
Colleges have been asked to get ready with the new system before the academic year begins. Students who don’t have 75% biometric attendance may not be allowed to appear for their final board exams.
