Alarming Surge: Crimes Against Women Skyrocket by 30% in City

Recent data released by Nagpur City Police reveals a shocking 30% increase in crimes against women over the past three years. The concerning trend paints a grim picture of escalating criminal activity within the city, overshadowing police efforts. In 2021, authorities recorded 1,122 cases of crimes against women, including 234 rapes, 356 molestations, 415 kidnappings, and 117 cases of dowry-related issues and domestic violence. This situation worsened in 2022, with reported cases rising to 1,285, and further escalated in 2023, reaching 1,467 cases.
Comparing data from 2021 to 2023 shows a 30.7% rise in reported incidents against women, with increases in rape (5.6%), molestation (33.4%), and kidnapping (15.4%) cases. Surprisingly, dowry and domestic violence cases remained constant at 235 in both 2022 and 2023, despite fluctuations in other crime categories.
Expressing concern, a retired police official emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, highlighting the need for proactive measures to prevent such crimes. He stressed the importance of education, condemning violence against women, and enhancing support systems for victims.
Furthermore, data from 2023 revealed distressing details, including 75 rape cases involving false promises of marriage and 55 cases stemming from love relationships. Notably, 115 incidents of rape were committed by relatives or acquaintances, underscoring a breach of trust within close circles. A woman police officer emphasized the role of parents in preventing such incidents, urging them to foster open communication and build relationships based on trust and guidance.
