Butibori Flyover Repair Plan Finalised After Two-Month Delay

Nagpur, India: The repair strategy for the Butibori flyover, which collapsed two months ago, has finally been decided. The decision was made on Tuesday after weeks of delay. Last week, the damaged cantilever was repaired, and reinforcement work on the studs was completed.

According to officials, the repair process will involve strengthening the bridge by adding a new, stronger layer to increase its weight-bearing capacity. However, attempts to get confirmation from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) about the bridge’s load-bearing capacity after repairs were unsuccessful. Sources suggest that NHAI officials are under heavy pressure.

During a meeting at VNIT, experts also finalised the materials to be used for the new layer to ensure the bridge can handle heavier loads. Earlier, reports stated that the repair work would take 45 days once it begins. However, with no confirmation from NHAI officials, it remains unclear when the work will officially start. Once a date is confirmed, authorities will begin a countdown for completion, similar to runway recarpeting projects.

Since the collapse, delays in the investigation and repair work have worsened traffic congestion beneath the bridge, causing significant time and fuel wastage for commuters.

A specialist agency will be appointed to carry out the repairs, as the bridge has shown structural weakness in just 3.5 years. Three agencies are currently being considered for the task, and one is expected to be selected within the next three days. The chosen agency is expected to complete the repairs before the end of April.
