Clouds Linger, But Nagpur Still Waits for Rainfall Despite Monsoon Arrival

Nagpur, India: Even though the monsoon officially arrived in Nagpur on June 17, the city continues to sizzle under intense heat and humidity, with no significant rainfall recorded so far. For the second consecutive day, dark clouds hovered over the skies but failed to bring relief, frustrating residents eagerly waiting for showers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Nagpur and the entire Vidarbha region until June 22, forecasting only light rain with gusty winds in the coming days. Meteorologists say that meaningful rainfall may take a few more days to arrive.
Ironically, the day the monsoon was declared, Nagpur recorded the highest temperature in the region at 38.2°C, which climbed further to 38.9°C on Wednesday — about 2°C above normal. Night temperatures also remained uncomfortably high at 28.2°C, 2.2°C above normal, adding to the discomfort. Humidity levels reached 51% during the day and dropped only slightly to 46% by evening.
According to weather officials, monsoon clouds have picked up speed and are advancing across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and parts of Uttar Pradesh. However, their growing concentration in North India has weakened the monsoon’s impact over Vidarbha. Additionally, low-pressure systems over Rajasthan and West Bengal are currently influencing weather patterns.
While the monsoon has officially covered all of Vidarbha, the rainfall has been scattered and mild. Bhandara recorded 16 mm, Brahmapuri 15.4 mm, Gondia 9.6 mm, Akola 3 mm, and Buldhana only 1 mm. Most districts have seen a slight dip in temperature — below 36°C — but the dry spell continues.
For now, the people of Nagpur remain under cloudy skies, hoping the rain will soon follow.
