Despite New Outer Ring Road, Trucks Still Use City Roads to Skip Toll

Nagpur, India: Heavy vehicles continue to use the Inner Ring Road from Wadi to Mankapur, leading to frequent accidents, even though the Outer Ring Road is now fully open for traffic. The main reason: truck drivers want to avoid paying toll charges.

The Outer Ring Road, connecting Fetri (Katol Road) to Kapsi (Bhandara Road), allows smooth travel between major routes like Wardha Road, Amravati Road, Koradi, Kamptee, and Bhandara Road. Despite this, many truckers still prefer the Inner Ring Road where no toll is charged. This has created serious safety concerns, especially at night, when trucks speed through the city roads.

Locals say the stretch sees little to no presence of traffic police, making the situation worse. “There should be traffic police at every square, even at night, to stop heavy vehicles from using this road,” said Ajay Singh, a resident near Pallotti School. “They must be made to take the Outer Ring Road instead.”

On Sunday morning, a tragic accident involving a heavy vehicle sparked fresh outrage. Residents believe it could have been avoided if trucks were kept off the inner roads.

Bosky Joseph, another resident, said, “Truck drivers break signals all the time. School buses, autos, and e-rickshaws carrying children also use this road. It’s dangerous.”

The toll plazas on the Outer Ring Road – one between Jamtha and Fetri, and another between Fetri and Kapsi – are pushing truckers to avoid the route. Though the new road wasn’t earlier shown on Google Maps, that issue has now been fixed.

Locals are demanding strict action from the traffic police to ensure heavy vehicles use the Outer Ring Road, which was built to reduce traffic and accidents within city limits.
