E-Toilets Installed in Nagpur to Address Sanitation Needs in Crowded Places

In an effort to tackle the sanitation needs of crowded places, particularly market spaces that attract a significant number of female visitors, Nagpur has introduced a pilot project involving the installation of e-toilets. Driven by the observation that patients and their relatives from the outskirts of the city faced difficulties in finding restroom facilities, the selection process for the pilot project locations also considered such factors.

Eram Scientific Solutions, a prominent developer, has designed and developed the e-toilets for the Nagpur pilot project. These innovative facilities feature a self-clearing automated mechanism, ensuring cleanliness and convenience for users. Each e-toilet carries a cost of approximately Rs8 lakh and is distinguishable by its blue color for men and pink color for women. Upon the insertion of a coin, the toilet is automatically flushed before and after use.

To facilitate waste management, e-toilets have been connected to drainage lines. In cases where direct connection is not possible, a biodigester system will be installed. Additionally, the toilets employ UV radiation to self-clean after each use. The responsibility of monitoring and maintenance of the e-toilets for the next six years lies with the company that developed them. The company will undertake maintenance for the first year, and subsequent provisions have been made for the following five years. Strict penalty clauses, ranging from 10% to 100%, have been included in the contract to ensure proper maintenance.
Even if the Smart City Project ceases to exist in the future, the e-toilets will remain fully functional for the citizens for the next six years. This commitment ensures that the benefits of improved sanitation will continue to be accessible to the public. The Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) plans to install 100 e-toilets at 50 locations identified by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) within the next two months.
According to the Public Toilets Data from January 2019, Nagpur had only 72 public toilets available for both men and women, with insufficient maintenance. The introduction of the e-toilet initiative aims to safeguard the right to sanitation for the people of Nagpur, particularly in crowded places. With the installation of these modern and self-cleaning e-toilets, the city takes a significant step towards improving sanitation infrastructure and ensuring a hygienic environment for its residents and visitors.
