Futala Fountains Face Setback as Underwater Cables Gets Damaged by Insects

The much-touted Futala Fountains, intended to be a world-class tourist attraction, has come to a standstill due to an unusual reason. The underwater cables responsible for supplying power to the fountains have been damaged by insects. This development has shed light on the lack of foresight displayed by the contractor, Khalatkar Construction Consortium (KCC), during the construction of the fountains. Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority (NMRDA) has taken serious note of the issue and demanded that KCC repair the damaged cables and hand over the functioning fountains to NMRDA.

Dr. Manoikumar Suryavanshi, the Metropolitan Commissioner, visited the site and was informed by KCC about the damage caused by insects and the entanglement of cables in algae. Samples of water from relevant locations have been sent for testing. Dr. Suryavanshi has instructed KCC to promptly carry out the necessary repairs and hand over the completed work to NMRDA within a month. The goal is to inaugurate the project and open it to the public. Additionally, the technical committee of Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) will assess the repairs upon completion.

The NMRDA has issued a stern warning to KCC, stating that failure to deliver the project within the specified timeframe will result in appropriate action being taken against the contractor. The authority emphasizes the importance of adhering to the agreed-upon deadline.

Questions have also been raised regarding the potential impact of extensive construction in close proximity to the lake, which could disrupt the aquatic ecosystem. Three major construction projects, including a large viewing gallery, fountains positioned in the middle of the water body, and a vehicle parking system near the road adjacent to Telangkhedi Lake, have raised concerns about their potential effects on the lake and its wildlife.
