Increased cybercrime in Nagpur, reaching up to 77.57 crores annually

The city has seen a rise in cyberfraud crimes. Citizens have been defrauded of 77.57 crores in as many as 152 cases during the past 14 months. Only thirty-two of these cases were successfully solved by the police. Thanks to the Right to Information, these specifics have become public. On November 1, 2022, the city formed its own independent cyber police station.

In this police station, 8 crimes totaling Rs 1 crore 1 lakh 2 thousand 785 were reported between November 1 and December 31, 2022. A total of Rs 70 crore 42 lakh 89 thousand 1 fraud cases were registered between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023.

Additionally, social activist Abhay Kolarkar stated that fraud cases of Rs 6 crore 13 million 92 thousand 967 were reported between January 1, 2024, and February 29, 2024. Just 32 incidents were reported in the previous 14 months, and 34 fraudsters were apprehended by the authorities.

The majority of the 133 offenses had to do with financial fraud. The RTI has also revealed 1 debit-credit fraud, 37 tradelike task scams, 4 cryptocurrency frauds, 6 bogus profiles, and net banking frauds. Thirteen of the total cases have reached an adjudication stage.
