Justice Delayed: No FIR After Stray Dog and Feeder Assaulted in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: In the quiet lanes of Sugat Nagar, Jaripatka, a shocking act of animal cruelty has left the community heartbroken and highlighted the failures of the justice system. Rocky, a stray dog cared for by local animal feeder Vipin Nagare, was brutally attacked and is now fighting for his life.

On the night of 14 May, Mangesh Bhimrao Dabhade, known locally for violent behaviour, lured Rocky with fake affection, pretending to offer biscuits. Trusting him, Rocky approached, only to be savagely beaten. The attack left Rocky with fractured legs and a broken spine, his painful cries waking nearby residents.

Vipin Nagare rushed out to help but was himself brutally assaulted by Dabhade, suffering a serious head injury. Nagare was taken to a private hospital and treated in intensive care before being discharged recently.

Rocky was moved to an animal shelter in Dhaba, run by Smita Mire, founder of the Save Speechless Organization (SSO). He remains in critical condition and requires complex surgery.

“Rocky’s physical injuries are severe, but the emotional trauma from such betrayal is even worse,” said Mire. She stressed that Rocky’s case is not isolated but a reflection of the daily violence faced by countless voiceless animals and the struggles of those who protect them.

Mire criticised the systemic indifference, saying, “When animal lovers speak out, they are ignored or attacked. Yet authorities act quickly when dogs are labelled as a nuisance. This double standard must end.”

Despite filing a complaint at Jaripatka Police Station, Nagare and others report that no FIR has been registered even after three days. Police say the FIR is on hold pending the Medico-Legal Case (MLC) report.

“We hope justice will be served, not just for Rocky but for all creatures who deserve safety, dignity, and protection,” said Mire.

This incident has deeply disturbed animal lovers and raised urgent questions about the protection of animals and those who care for them in the city.
