Koradi Plant Expansion Challenged in NGT, Mahagenco Tells HC

Nagpur, India: The Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) told the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court that the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change (MOEFCC) has approved the expansion of the Koradi Thermal Power Plant. Mahagenco gave this information in an affidavit.

The plan is to add two new units of 660 MW each to the existing 2,190 MW power plant. The environmental clearance for the project was given on 19 September 2024. However, the Alert Citizen Forum, Nagpur, has challenged this approval in the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Pune.

A public interest case (PIL) was also filed by Dinesh Naidu, Secretary of Vidarbha Connect, and others. They are worried that the expansion could harm people’s health, damage the environment, and affect agriculture. They also raised concerns about the disposal of fly ash and asked the court to cancel the clearance.

Mahagenco has defended the project and opposed these claims. The court, led by Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Vrushali Joshi, noted Mahagenco's statement and scheduled the next hearing for 2 April. Advocate Mohit Khajanchi represented Mahagenco in the court.
