Nagpur, India: In a heartfelt tribute to one of India’s most revered rulers, the Maharashtra government has announced the production of a biopic on Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar, commemorating her 300th birth anniversary this year.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis made the announcement on 7 May at Chondi village in Jamkhed tehsil, the birthplace of Ahilyabai Holkar, now part of the recently renamed Ahilyanagar district. The film will highlight the life and legacy of the iconic 18th-century queen who is celebrated for her wise governance, progressive reforms, and religious contributions.
The biopic will be made in Marathi and several other Indian languages, with plans to broadcast it on Doordarshan and major OTT platforms to reach a broader audience. The project will be executed through the Maharashtra Film, Theatre and Cultural Development Corporation, while Film City in Mumbai will manage the production.
Fadnavis assured that full financial support would be provided for the project, ensuring that the film meets both historical accuracy and cinematic standards. He added that the biopic aims to inspire future generations by showcasing Ahilyabai’s devotion to public service and justice.
Ahilyabai Holkar, born on 31 May 1725, took over the Holkar kingdom after the deaths of her husband and father-in-law. She is remembered for her social initiatives, temple restorations across India, and for being a just and visionary leader. Her life has previously been portrayed in the Hindi television series Punyashlok Ahilyabai, which aired from 2021 to 2023.
The new film is part of a wider initiative by the state to honour her contributions, which also includes cultural events and development projects throughout the year.
