Mahavitran's mission to set up Prepaid Power Meter in every home

Now that mobile services are prepaid and postpaid, so is power. After the old meters have been removed, smart meters will now be put in every home. If there is insufficient balance on the prepaid meter, the energy supply will be cut off. The electricity service will be reinstated following recharging.

Six bids totaling Rs. 26 crores have been allocated, and four businesses, including Adani Power, have received letters of acceptance. In the next 27 months, these businesses would have to replace the meters of 2.37 crore clients across the state with prepaid smart meters. For the following ten years, these businesses will be in charge of meter maintenance and repair.

Mahavitran holds onto a month's worth of bills under the guise of a security deposit. However, the business will receive the payment in advance once the prepaid meter arrives. The question of whether security deposits would be refunded to customers following the installation of smart meters now arises. To stop electricity theft and loss, smart meters will also be put in 27,000 feeders and 4 lakh transformers throughout the state. The feeder already has meters in place. But it serves little purpose because there is no chip.

This information was provided by Lokesh Chandra, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahavitaran, who traveled to Nagpur to assess the power distribution infrastructure. In the upcoming four months, he stated, work on altering the meters will begin. However, it has been instructed to start offering smart meters for new connections as early as next month.
