Mayo Interns Protest After Hospital Worker’s Obscene Behaviour

Nagpur, India: A sanitation worker at Mayo Hospital in Nagpur was arrested after allegedly performing an obscene act inside a hospital lift in front of a female intern, triggering strong protests from medical interns and staff on Tuesday.

The incident reportedly took place when the intern entered the lift and witnessed the worker’s inappropriate behaviour. She immediately reported the matter to hospital authorities, who swiftly informed the police. The accused was taken into custody the same day.

Angered by the incident, dozens of medical interns gathered within the hospital premises to stage a protest. They raised slogans and demanded stricter safety protocols, CCTV surveillance in lifts, and immediate disciplinary action against the accused. The interns expressed concern over the lack of adequate security for female staff and interns, calling it a serious lapse on the hospital’s part.

Hospital officials have acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and assured the protesting staff that steps will be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future. They also confirmed that police investigation is underway and that the accused will face appropriate legal action.

This disturbing incident has sparked a wider conversation about safety and dignity in public healthcare institutions, with calls for systemic reforms to protect hospital staff, especially women, from harassment and misconduct.
