Nagpur, India: In a serious breach of security, an undertrial prisoner lodged in Nagpur Central Jail managed to escape from the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the early hours of Sunday, sparking a manhunt across the city.
The absconding prisoner, Harsh Mahendra Ramteke (23), a resident of Bhandara, was undergoing treatment at GMCH’s Ward No. 36 since 16 May. He had complained of giddiness and vomiting blood and was admitted under police custody. Ramteke was arrested on 1 April by Rana Pratap Nagar police in connection with a string of burglary cases in Gondia and Nagpur.
According to CCTV footage, Ramteke was last seen slipping out of the ward at approximately 1:45 am on 18 May. Reports suggest that at the time of the escape and no personnel from the Police Headquarters guard team – responsible for night duty after 9 pm – were present.
Sources indicate that Ramteke used a piece of cloth to conceal the IV drip attached to his arm to avoid raising suspicion. His escape has raised questions about coordination and accountability between jail authorities and the police.
Jail officials clarified that their responsibility ended at 9 pm when police headquarters took over security. Following the incident, an FIR has been registered at Ajni police station, and an internal inquiry is underway to identify lapses.
Police teams have begun searching at the homes of Ramteke’s relatives and acquaintances in hopes of tracking him down. Authorities have appealed to the public to report any information regarding his whereabouts.
This incident has triggered fresh concerns over prisoner security protocols at GMCH, a facility often used for treating inmates from Nagpur Central Jail.
