Nagpur Central Jail Inmates Grow Crops Worth ₹79 Lakh in 3 Years

Nagpur, India: In a notable move towards rehabilitation and self-sufficiency, inmates at Nagpur Central Jail have cultivated crops worth ₹79 lakh over the past three years. This initiative, part of a state-wide prison farming programme, reflects how correctional facilities are focusing on productive reformation.

Between April 2022 and March 2025, prisoners worked on cultivating vegetables, pulses, and grains using basic mechanised tools. The project not only provided fresh produce for the jail’s kitchen but also generated additional income. During the financial year 2023–24 alone, agricultural activities in the jail yielded crops valued at over ₹29.5 lakh.

Nagpur is one of 31 jails in Maharashtra actively involved in farming activities. Across the state, nearly 900 inmates participate in such work. The state government has been supporting the programme by providing essential farming tools like power tillers and sowing machines to improve efficiency.

Apart from agriculture, inmates in Nagpur jail are also engaged in manufacturing furniture, sanitary products, and other vocational activities, contributing to an annual income of around ₹2.5 crore from prison industries.

Authorities say that these initiatives aim not only to reduce operational costs but also to prepare inmates for a better future post-release. The programme is seen as a successful model of reform and reintegration through meaningful work.
