Nagpur Municipal Corporation Partners with Dutch Company for Garbage-to-Biogas Plant

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has joined hands with Netherlands-based M/s SusBDe to set up a composting plant and MRF Centre to process solid waste into biogas.
The NMC has found a solution to the mounting garbage problem in the city by partnering with M/s SusBDe to convert waste into wealth. The Dutch company will establish a state-of-the-art plant that will process 1,200 metric tonnes of wet and dry waste daily, making it the largest garbage processing facility in the country. The NMC will provide land for the project, and in return, will receive annual rent and a share in carbon credits.
Under the concession agreement, M/s SusBDe will set up a 600 TPD composting plant and 380 MTPD MRF Centre on 29 acres of land at Bhandewadi provided by the NMC. The initial agreement is for 15 years, extendable for another 15 years. The NMC will not make any financial contribution to the project, making it a win-win situation for the civic body.
The plant will have zero waste discharge, with only a small amount of inert material being put to good use. It will not require external water for processing, and no effluent will be discharged from the plant, making it environmentally-friendly. The NMC will receive an annual rent for the leased land, and will also get a 50% share in carbon credits. The plant is expected to generate revenue from the first day of its operation.
The Municipal Commissioner emphasized the importance of waste segregation, stating that more segregated garbage will result in higher biogas generation, which is an eco-friendly fuel. He also mentioned that M/s SusBDe will provide technology for bio-mining the historic garbage at Bhandewadi, which will lead to a substantial change in the area and improve the quality of air for the people living nearby. The NMC aims to increase the current waste segregation ratio from 60-70% to over 90% to support the project's success.
