The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has mentioned to the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court that it has selected four locations to house the city's overwhelming population of over 90,000 stray dogs.

During the court proceedings on Thursday, NMC's legal representative, Sudhir Puranik, disclosed that the identified areas span between 13.49 hectares and 52.73 hectares in size.

A panel comprising Justices Avinash Gharote and Mukulika Jawalkar instructed the municipal body to provide details about the measures taken to establish facilities for accommodating these stray dogs. "The PIL will be scheduled for June 13 along with the related matters as it is currently sub judice in the Supreme Court," the bench remarked during the hearing.

These directives unfolded within the context of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) initiated by social activist Vijay Talewat, represented by lawyer Firdos Mirza, addressing the escalating issue of stray dog nuisance in Nagpur, subsequently converted into a PIL.

Puranik further detailed that NMC has identified one site each in Dudhabhari (Rithi) and Tishti, along with two sites in Tondkhairi. The former two locations are situated approximately 46 and 60 kilometers away from the city, while the latter are at a distance of 23 kilometers.
