Nagpur’s Bloody April: 14 Killed in 13 Murder Cases in Just 30 Days

Nagpur, India: The city of Nagpur, home to the Chief Minister and a Union Minister, witnessed a worrying rise in violence during April. In just 30 days, 13 murder cases were reported, resulting in 14 deaths. That means there was almost one murder every two days, leaving many citizens shocked and concerned about their safety.

The latest murder happened on 30 April in Wadi. A 27-year-old man named Suraj Subhash Bhalavi, who lived in Sonba Nagar, was beaten to death by staff at a local liquor bar. The attack reportedly started after Suraj accidentally spilled some liquor. The accused include Vishal Divekar, Rohit Varkhade, Sandeep Chavan, Sunil Gote, Prabhakar Chintamani, and others.

Many other murders in April were caused by personal fights or sudden anger. In one case in Hudkeshwar, a man poisoned his friend out of jealousy. In another case from the same area, a female assistant professor from Government Medical College and Hospital was allegedly murdered by her husband and his brother. Similar cases were reported in Yashodharanagar, Pachpaoli, and Jaripatka.

Police Commissioner Takes Strict Steps

In response to the rising crime, Police Commissioner Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal took strong action. He suspended three police officers, including two women officers from MIDC police station. He also shut down the investigation teams at Ambazari and Kapil Nagar police stations. The commissioner is now doing surprise night checks, launching search operations, and warning criminals to stay in line.

“Most of these murders happened due to personal issues or sudden anger. We have solved all the cases and arrested the main accused,” said Dr Singal.

Gang Fights and Revenge Killings

Some murders were linked to old rivalries and gang fights. On 3 April, Sohail Khan was shot dead in Mankapur over a fight about space for stalls at a market. On 9 April, two known criminals — Sagar Masram and Laxman Gondya — were killed in a gang war in Vasantrao Naik Slum.

On 15 April, café owner Avinash Bhusari was murdered in Dharampeth by the Bunty Hiranwar gang in revenge for a past killing. Another major crime happened in Kapil Nagar, where property dealer Ankush Kadu was killed in a planned murder, possibly arranged by a woman linked to a land mafia group.
