Nandanvan Police Takes Action Against 20 Culprits

Nandanvan Police has filed charges against 20 individuals, including the mastermind, in a case involving criminals assaulting their rivals due to an escalating gang war arising from a gambling dispute. The police swiftly responded to the media of the incident, registering a case of extortion, assault, and rioting against Sarfaraz of Gaddig Godam, Kunal Samundre of Mahal, and their 20 associates.
The criminals lured Nandanvan resident Sudesh, also known as Michael Raut, to Jaganade Square under the guise of a discussion, where he and his companions were attacked and suffered serious injuries. In response to the severity of the incident, the police conducted a raid at Michael's residence, discovering him injured. During interrogation, Michael confessed to the attack, leading to the registration of the case. Notably, Michael has a criminal background.
Sarfaraz, Kunal, and their associates operate a gambling den in Kalamna village of Panchgaon. Michael had engaged in gambling with his friends on the night of December 29, losing ₹1.5 lakh. Sarfaraz lent him ₹1 lakh to continue betting. After losing this amount as well, Michael returned home on the morning of December 30.
At 10 pm, Sarfaraz demanded the repayment of the money, prompting Michael to promise repayment within a day or two. The situation escalated when Sarfaraz called Michael to Jaganade Square for resolution. Michael, accompanied by friends Himanshu and Anup, arrived at the location where Sarfaraz, Kunal Samundre, and their associates were already present. Sarfaraz insisted on immediate payment, attacking Michael when he requested more time. Threats were made to kill Michael if ₹2 lakh were not provided in exchange for the ₹1 lakh borrowed. As Michael protested, the criminals assaulted him with weapons, also beating his friends before fleeing the scene. Following the incident, Michael sought treatment in a private hospital and filed a complaint with the police.
Upon learning of the complaint, Sarfaraz, Kunal, and their accomplices evaded capture. Kunal Samundre, with a history of serious offences including an attempted robbery, had recently been apprehended. However, no action was taken following pressure from a prominent leader's brother. This leniency allows individuals like Kunal to evade strict consequences despite their criminal activities.
The incident highlights the rampant operation of gambling dens in the city's border areas, posing a significant concern for the region known as the crime capital. Instances of police personnel engaging in activities such as eve-teasing and assault, forming special teams, and profiting through extortion further exacerbate the situation.
