Operation Thunder: ₹865 Crore Worth of Drugs Seized, 730 Arrested in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: In a major crackdown on narcotics, the Nagpur Police have seized drugs worth ₹865 crore and arrested 730 individuals between March and June this year as part of the nationwide ‘Drug-Free City’ campaign under Operation Thunder.
The large-scale operation was carried out with the combined efforts of the city police, anti-narcotics units, and support from central agencies. Targeting hotspots across Nagpur, the raids focused on curbing the growing drug menace in the region.
Officials reported that over 1,200 raids were conducted during the period, leading to the recovery of a wide variety of banned substances. The haul included heroin, cocaine, cannabis, MDMA pills, and other synthetic drugs. Many of the arrested individuals are believed to be part of a larger inter-state drug network.
Police have confirmed that legal action under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act is being taken against all the accused. Investigations are ongoing to identify the sources and financial links of the drug trade in the region.
The operation has been praised by community leaders and citizens, who view it as a crucial step toward making Nagpur safer for youth and families. Authorities have also indicated that a second phase of enforcement and rehabilitation programmes will be launched in the coming months to ensure long-term impact.
The Drug-Free City campaign continues to gain momentum across India, with Nagpur emerging as one of the key centres in the fight against drugs.
