Smart Traffic System Not Enough Without Basic Road Safety Upgrades in Nagpur

Nagpur, India: As road accidents and pedestrian deaths continue to rise across Nagpur, experts and citizens are calling for immediate, practical steps to improve road safety. While smart traffic systems are being tested, many believe simple, low-cost solutions can save lives more quickly.
Unsafe Roads Demand Urgent Fixes
One major concern is the poorly lit service lane near Chinchbhuvan on Wardha Road, where six pedestrians have reportedly lost their lives in the past year. With no zebra crossings, streetlights, or signage, the stretch remains a danger zone for both walkers and drivers, especially at night.
Despite repeated complaints from locals, authorities have yet to address these basic safety lapses.
Technology Offers Hope — But Isn’t Enough Alone
Nagpur has begun piloting an ₹197 crore Intelligent and Integrated Traffic Management System (IITMS) at three busy junctions — Laxmi Nagar, Deekshabhoomi, and Shraddhanandpeth. These smart systems use AI-powered signals, number plate recognition cameras, speed monitors, and display boards to regulate traffic, catch violations, and reduce congestion.
While this is a positive step, experts warn that it must be supported by on-ground improvements to truly enhance safety.
Simple Steps Can Make a Big Difference
Traffic and civic experts suggest the following immediate measures:
-
Install bright street lighting and reflective signs in accident-prone zones.
-
Paint clear pedestrian crossings or build foot-overbridges where necessary.
-
Place rumble strips and safety barricades at risky stretches.
-
Increase police presence and enforcement during peak hours.
Many of these are cost-effective and can be implemented quickly while the city gradually rolls out its smart systems.
Safety First, Now
With the monsoon approaching and road conditions likely to worsen, residents are urging the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and traffic police to prioritise public safety. Simple upgrades like lighting and signage, along with smart technology, can together create safer roads for all.
The time to act, citizens say, is now — before more lives are lost.
