SC Orders Maharashtra to Hold Local Body Polls Under Old Quota Rules

Nagpur, India: The Supreme Court of India has instructed Maharashtra to hold local body elections, including the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, within the next four months. The Court has directed that the elections be conducted according to the old reservation pattern, reinstating the previous quota system for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

The ruling comes after a period of political uncertainty over the reservation system for local body elections. The Maharashtra government had previously sought to modify the reservation framework, but the Supreme Court’s decision ensures that the elections will proceed under the previous arrangement.

The Court emphasised the urgency of holding the elections, citing the democratic necessity of having elected representatives in local bodies. The decision has been welcomed by political leaders, who are now preparing for the elections, viewing them as a crucial gauge of public sentiment ahead of upcoming state elections.

The verdict reinforces the need for timely elections and the maintenance of established reservation policies, ensuring that local governance remains fair and representative.
