Nagpur, India: Strict and timely police action on molestation cases has led to a noticeable drop in rape cases in Nagpur, with officials reporting a 35% decline in such crimes up to mid-April this year compared to the same period in 2024.
According to police records, 84 rape cases were registered by mid-April 2024, while only 29 have been reported so far this year. At the same time, molestation cases have gone up from 134 to 167 — a rise of 25%. However, police say this increase reflects improved reporting and public confidence rather than a rise in crime itself.
Officers attribute the fall in rape cases to early intervention in harassment cases, which helps prevent more serious offences. By taking immediate legal action against initial acts of misconduct — such as stalking or verbal abuse — police believe they are successfully stopping escalation into more violent crimes.
One such example is the Beltarodi police station, which filed a chargesheet in a molestation case within just 13 hours, showcasing the department’s fast-track efforts.
Officials say they will continue this proactive approach to ensure women’s safety across the city.
