Nagpur, India: In a significant gesture of responsibility, the Tata Group has announced that it will provide a compensation of ₹1 crore each to the families of 33 individuals who lost their lives on the ground during the tragic Air India Flight AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad.
The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed into the premises of B. J. Medical College on 12 June, killing 279 people in total — including 241 onboard and 38 on the ground. Among the ground victims were students and staff residing in the medical hostel that was struck by the aircraft.
While compensation for passengers is typically guided by international aviation laws such as the Montreal Convention, there has historically been no clear provision for individuals affected on the ground. The Tata Group's decision to compensate these families marks a significant move towards acknowledging the broader impact of such disasters.
In addition to the financial compensation, Tata Group has committed to covering all medical expenses for the injured and has assured support for rebuilding the damaged hostel building at B. J. Medical College.
Investigations into the cause of the crash are currently underway, with Indian aviation authorities working alongside international experts from the UK, USA, and Boeing. The incident has sparked renewed discussions around aircraft safety standards and compensation laws in India.
