The Transport Department of NMC presents a budget of rupees 359 crore

The Department of Nagpur Municipal corporation (NMC) set forth the budget for session 2023-2024 of Rs 359.08 crore, no hike in fair have been suggested for the Apli Bus Service in Nagpur. The State and Central Governments have drifted their focus on electric vehicles, therefore the NMC’s Transport Department has sanctioned the agreement with PMI Electro Mobility for 144 electric buses with funds from the 15th Finance Commission. These buses will be part of the city bus fleet, by the end of the year. 

According to sources, Deputy Commissioner Ravindra Bhelave of Nagpur Municipal Corporation stated that by introducing Nagpur’s Majhi Metro, the civic transport finds it tough as the number of travellers has dropped to one lakh per day in contrast with previous years, estimated approximately to be 1.60 lakhs. 

Adding to the information, Mr Bhelave discusses the finalizing of the Transport Department for the next budget year with an expenditure of Rs. 359.08 crores, with a surplus of Rs. 21.45 lakh. The last year’s expense in the ticket was ensured in January 2019 and, following that modest increase was in July 2022. However, the rise in train tickets has not been considered yet, in future this question may be open to negotiation for Transport Department.

Transport Department has developed a special head, named “Revenue Surplus Fund”, and besides Transport Improvement Fund has also been added to the budget. At present, nearly 1.10 lakh travellers are in the city and the last increase in ticket rates was put forward in June 2022 that’s when NMC raised it by Rs. 2 to compensate for the losses.

An advertising policy has been finalized by the NMC however, modest expenses are expected by Transport Department by selling advertising rights on buses and their stops. Taking the acknowledgement of technology, Mr Bhelave stated about considering the tap in and out could assist in reducing the losses. This experiment was carried out on the Khaperkheda route and received a positive response.

NMC has also drafted a backup plan for the next financial year, the NMC officially stated that Rs 8 crore received from the 15th Finance Commission is sanctioned and to be utilized in charging stations for electric buses at Wathoda on a 10-acre land. NMC collects Rs 14,600 per bus stop and that’s invested in advertising rights.
