Nagpur, India: Torrent Power is planning to supply electricity in Nagpur, and the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has taken the first step by approving its application. A public hearing will be held on 22 July 2025 to hear people’s opinions before giving final approval.
Currently, only Mahavitaran (MSEDCL), the state electricity board, supplies power to the city. If approved, Torrent Power will become another option for Nagpur residents. It plans to build its own electricity network and supply power at rates fixed by MERC.
The company has already been working in other cities like Bhiwandi and Agra, where it is known for reducing power theft and improving service. Now, it wants to expand to Nagpur.
MERC is inviting suggestions and objections from the public. People can send their comments online before the hearing. If everything goes well, Torrent Power might start building its infrastructure soon and begin supplying power in Nagpur by next year.
Many citizens see this as a good move that could improve electricity services in the city. However, some workers and unions have raised concerns about job security and the possible impact on MSEDCL.
