Ambulances Stuck, Roads Blocked: Medical Square Gridlock Sparks Outrage

Nagpur, India: Medical Square, one of Nagpur’s busiest junctions, descended into chaos on Thursday evening as a severe traffic jam paralysed movement for over three hours, causing critical delays for ambulances and immense inconvenience to daily commuters.
The congestion began around 5 PM and persisted until nearly 8 PM, severely affecting traffic flow at the six-road intersection near Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). With no traffic personnel in sight for nearly two hours, the situation quickly spiralled out of control.
As many as 10 to 12 ambulances carrying patients were reportedly stuck in the jam, unable to reach GMCH and other nearby hospitals. Additionally, over two dozen private long-distance buses and hundreds of two-wheelers and cars were caught in the chaos.
The gridlock had a ripple effect across major adjoining roads, including Reshimbagh Square, Baidyanath Square, and Ashok Square. Commuters expressed frustration at the absence of timely intervention by the traffic department, with many criticising the lack of planning at such a critical junction.
Medical Square has long been a known trouble spot for traffic, but Thursday’s incident exposed glaring lapses in traffic management. With the area being a vital route for emergency vehicles and public transport, citizens are now demanding immediate and permanent solutions to prevent a repeat of such a crisis.
