Drain Blocked with Weeds in Danaganj Triggers Urgent Civic Response

Nagpur, India: With the monsoon season fast approaching, a long-neglected, weed-choked drain in Danaganj has sparked urgent action from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Following complaints and a ground inspection, Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari has ordered immediate clearance of the overgrown drainage channel.
The drain, which passes through the South East Central Railway premises and affects areas such as Danaganj, Harihar Mandir, and the Small Factory Area, has been a known source of flooding during the rains due to poor maintenance. Dense vegetation and silt deposits have blocked water flow, raising serious concerns about potential waterlogging and health hazards.
During his inspection on Thursday, Commissioner Chaudhari was accompanied by NMC officials and engineers. He was briefed by former corporator Narendra Borkar about the annual flooding residents face due to the blocked drain. In response, the Commissioner directed his team to secure necessary permissions from the railway authorities and begin desilting and cleaning work without delay.
This action comes amid wider criticism of the NMC for being underprepared for the monsoon. Despite a May 19 deadline, none of the city’s 10 zones have submitted updated lists of flood-prone spots. Notorious areas like Narendra Nagar underbridge and Shatabdi Square remain unattended. Last year, Nagpur saw flooding in 76 locations and water entered the basements of 57 buildings.
The Commissioner has warned of disciplinary action against officials who fail to act promptly and has instructed all zones to expedite pre-monsoon preparations.
Residents hope the latest intervention in Danaganj marks the beginning of more proactive flood prevention measures citywide.
