Mission Mukti Rescue Operation Targets Homeless in Ganeshpeth Area, Nagpur

Nagpur, India: Under the visionary leadership of Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Kumar Single, the Nagpur Police have been running a dedicated initiative called “Mission Mukti.” This campaign aims to rescue and rehabilitate homeless, destitute, and wandering people living on the streets, helping to bring them back into the mainstream of society. The first two phases of this campaign were successfully implemented, and all 33 police stations across Nagpur have been instructed to actively participate in this mission.

In continuation of this effort, on 21 May 2025 at 11:00 am, a rescue operation was carried out within the jurisdiction of Ganeshpeth Police Station, focusing on the areas around Santra Market and Chand Shahavali Dargah. Over the past few days, several homeless families had set up makeshift shelters here, creating problems for passers-by and commuters near Railway Station Gate No. 8 by begging and causing disturbances. This also led to increased litter and untidiness in the area.

In view of this situation, the “Mission Mukti” team conducted a planned rescue operation. Police Inspector Machhindran Pandit took the lead, coordinating with Anant Mankar, Junior Engineer of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Gandhi Bagh Zone 4, Shailesh Humne, Head of the Encroachment Squad, and teams from the Social Security Department, Beggar Squad, and District Women and Child Welfare Department. A large vehicle and adequate manpower were requested via the police control room for the operation. Officials and staff from all these departments assembled at Ganeshpeth Police Station and received detailed briefings about the rescue.

During the operation, officers from all departments reached Santra Market and took into custody a total of 23 homeless individuals, including 6 men, 4 women, and 13 children. While some initially resisted, they were reassured that they would be taken to the Astha Shelter Centre on Ghat Road for rehabilitation. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Encroachment and Cleanliness squads removed unusable material from the area and, with the help of a JCB machine, thoroughly cleaned the locality.

This joint operation was conducted under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr. Ravindra Single, led by Ganeshpeth Police Inspector Machhindran Pandit, along with Junior Engineer Anant Mankar, Encroachment Squad Chief Shailesh Humne, Women Police Constable Lata Gavli from the Beggar Squad, ASI Deepak Zjade, Women and Child Development Officers Mrs. Megha Patil and Meenakshi Dhadade, and five other police officers with 15 staff members.

The Police Commissioner emphasised that “Mission Mukti” is not only carried out by the police but also strengthened by the active participation of charitable organisations. Nagpur Police continue to receive strong support from various social groups, with volunteers enthusiastically joining this vital mission to uplift vulnerable sections of society.
