Nagpur Bride Dies by Suicide 35 Days After Marriage, In-Laws Arrested

Nagpur: In a tragic incident that has shaken the Butibori region of Nagpur district, 22-year-old Mayuri Dahule ended her life just 35 days after her love marriage, allegedly following sustained dowry-related harassment and physical abuse by her husband and in-laws. Police have arrested her husband, Abhishek Dahule, and his family members in connection with the case.
Mayuri, a resident of Sonegaon in Butibori, tied the knot with Abhishek on April 25, marking the end of a four-year-long relationship. However, what began as a love marriage soon took a dark turn, as Mayuri was reportedly subjected to constant pressure to bring dowry, along with threats and violence from her husband, father-in-law Deepak Dahule, mother-in-law Kusum, and brother-in-law Aditya.
According to the police, the in-laws repeatedly demanded money from Mayuri’s family, despite an earlier agreement that the groom’s side would bear the wedding expenses. Her father, Baba Thakre, a daily wage labourer from Rama village, revealed that the family had already paid ₹20,000 but was being coerced to pay an additional ₹2 lakh.
"They kept threatening my son when he went to talk to them. They would say, 'Tell your father to bring the money, only then come here,’" Thakre said. The grieving father added that his daughter was verbally abused and physically assaulted, and that the harassment persisted despite repeated attempts to intervene.
Mayuri, who had completed her 12th grade and trained as a nurse, worked as a daily wage labourer to support her family before marriage. “We waited for her to become an adult before allowing the marriage, thinking she would be happy. But we never imagined it would end like this,” Thakre said with anguish.
On the night of May 30, while her in-laws were away attending a function, Mayuri reportedly hanged herself using a sari from the ceiling fan. Shockingly, the in-laws did not inform her family. It was only after a hospital staff member, who was a friend of a relative, called Thakre at around 1 a.m. on May 31 that the family came to know of her death.
Thakre filed a formal police complaint the same day. The Butibori police arrested all four accused, who were produced in court on June 1 and remanded to magisterial custody.
“A case has been registered under relevant sections related to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. Investigations are ongoing,” said a senior official from Butibori police station.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about dowry-related violence, even in cases of love marriages, and sparked outrage among residents.
