Nagpur, India: The Nagpur Crime Branch has cracked a major burglary case, arresting four people, including a habitual burglar and his girlfriend, who also happens to be a lawyer. The gang is accused of stealing valuables worth ₹24 lakh from a house in the Mahal area under Kotwali police station.
The main accused, Naresh Mahilange, is a repeat offender with a criminal history involving more than 100 burglaries across Nagpur and neighbouring districts. In a surprising twist, police discovered that Mahilange’s girlfriend, a practising lawyer, not only helped him secure bail in 18 previous cases but also allegedly joined him in planning and executing the theft.
The burglary occurred on 3 June, when Mahilange and his associate Amrapal Patil broke into the Jasani family’s locked home in Mahal. They looted cash and jewellery, and even destroyed the CCTV DVR to erase evidence. However, investigators managed to trace Mahilange using CCTV footage from surrounding areas, mobile phone tracking, and analysis of his walking style.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Patil, the lawyer-girlfriend, and a fourth accused, Fardeen Khan, who reportedly helped in disposing of the stolen goods. Police recovered stolen items worth ₹21 lakh, including gold, silver, and cash.
Authorities revealed that the lawyer used fake documents to buy SIM cards and also assisted the gang in selling the stolen valuables. All four have been taken into custody and are being questioned for their involvement in other cases.
The operation was led by DCP (Crime) Rahul Maknikar and his team, with support from ACP Abhijit Patil and Additional CP Vasant Pardeshi.
Police are now expanding the investigation to identify links to several unsolved thefts across the city.
