Nagpur West Still at Risk of Flooding as Wall Work Remains Incomplete

Nagpur, India: People living in Prashant Colony, Borgaon (West Nagpur), are worried once again as the area remains unprotected before the monsoon. Last year, heavy rains caused water from a nearby stormwater drain to flood their homes, damaging property and forcing families to evacuate.
After that incident in September 2023, the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) approved a ₹2 crore project to build a wall to stop flooding. But instead of protecting Prashant Colony—the most affected area—officials built a wall near Gokul Society, which faced less damage.
A small 35-foot wall was built in Prashant Colony after residents protested, but work stopped soon after and hasn't started again. NIT says some residents didn’t pay their share of the cost, but locals argue that even those who did pay are still left unprotected.
One resident, Salim Abdul Qadir Khan, who lost ₹1.5 lakh worth of goods in the flood, received only ₹10,000 in aid. “If it floods again, it won’t just be about money—we may lose lives,” he said.
Residents have met with the Municipal Commissioner and local leaders and even held protests. But still, nothing has been done.
This problem is not just in Prashant Colony. Across Nagpur, flood protection work is delayed. The state government had approved ₹196 crore for flood control, but many repairs, like cleaning drains and fixing river walls, are still pending.
With the rainy season just around the corner, people are urging the authorities to finish the work quickly and prevent another disaster.
