Nagpur’s Nautapa Begins with Rain Instead of Heatwave

Nagpur, India: In a welcome twist to the usual scorching start of 'Nautapa', Nagpur began the traditionally hottest nine-day stretch of the year under a cloudy sky with spells of light rain and cooler-than-expected temperatures.

Contrary to the intense heat typically associated with this period, Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of just 36°C on Sunday — nearly 7°C below the seasonal average. The unseasonal weather brought much-needed relief to residents who had been bracing for extreme summer conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the dip in temperatures to active weather systems across the region, which have led to increased cloud cover and scattered rainfall. The conditions are expected to continue for the next few days, offering further respite.

Several parts of Vidarbha also witnessed moderate rainfall, with nearby districts like Gadchiroli, Buldhana, and Akola receiving showers ranging between 20 and 30 mm. Buldhana reported the lowest temperature in the region at 27.2°C, while Chandrapur, usually among the hottest spots, remained relatively mild at 37.2°C.

With the southwest monsoon making an early onset in parts of Maharashtra, weather officials predict that it may reach Vidarbha ahead of schedule — possibly before mid-June. If the trend continues, Nagpur may see an early end to its harsh summer phase.

For now, citizens are enjoying the unexpected relief, though authorities continue to advise caution during the seasonal transition.
