New Delhi, India: In a decisive move following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has granted the Indian Armed Forces complete freedom to plan and execute a military response. The attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives, has triggered widespread outrage and prompted an urgent review of the nation’s security posture.
The announcement was made after a high-level security meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan. During the meeting, PM Modi expressed full confidence in the armed forces and authorised them to determine the timing, method, and scale of retaliation.
The Pahalgam attack, carried out on April 22, is believed to have been orchestrated by the Pakistan-backed terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba through its proxy, The Resistance Front. India has since intensified diplomatic efforts, briefing envoys from major global powers, including the US, UK, Russia, China, and Japan.
In a strong diplomatic step, India has also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a longstanding agreement with Pakistan. In response, Pakistan has called the move provocative and suspended all Indian visas and bilateral engagements, including the Simla Agreement.
Addressing the nation, Prime Minister Modi stated, “The time has come to crush the remnants of terror. The resolve of 140 crore Indians will shatter the backbone of those who shelter terrorism.”
As preparations are underway, the Indian military is expected to finalise a strategic and calculated response in the coming days, while global powers continue to call for restraint to prevent a larger conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
