Nagpur, India: In a magical moment that turned the everyday sky into a canvas of wonder, a rare solar halo appeared above Nagpur on Wednesday, stunning residents and filling social media with mesmerising photos.
The spectacular ring of light — a perfect circle glowing around the sun — left many gazing upward in disbelief. For hours, the skies above the city shimmered with this optical marvel, creating a buzz among sky watchers and casual onlookers alike.
Experts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) explained that this was a 22-degree halo, formed when sunlight interacts with tiny ice crystals in thin, high-altitude cirrostratus clouds. The crystals bend and reflect the light, producing the glowing halo effect. Though scientifically explained, the sight itself felt nothing short of otherworldly.
“It’s a beautiful natural phenomenon and quite rare to witness in this region,” said Dr Rizwan Ahmed of the IMD. “It often signals a change in weather, but for most people, it’s simply a breathtaking experience.”
The timing was also notable — the halo appeared during Vidarbha’s Zero Shadow Day period (May 17–28), when the sun is directly overhead and objects cast little or no shadow at noon.
As the summer heat blazed on, this unexpected spectacle offered a brief but magical escape. Children pointed, adults paused, and photographers reached for their cameras — all united under the brilliance of a solar ring that reminded Nagpur of the wonders hidden in the sky.
